The Beautiful and Damned is the story of Anthony Patch and his wife, Gloria. Harvard-educated and an aspiring aesthete, Patch is waiting for his inheritance upon his grandfather's death. His reckless marriage to Gloria is fueled by alcohol and is destroyed by greed. The Patches race through a series of alcohol-induced fiascoes – first in hilarity, and then in despair. The Beautiful and Damned, a devastating portrait of the nouveaux riches, New York night life, reckless ambition, and squandered talent, was published in 1922 on the heels of Fitzgerald's first novel. It signaled his maturity as a storyteller and, more important, as a novelist.
Fitzgerald mostanában mindig csak csalódást okozott nekem, de kitartóan próbálkoztam - na, most befejeztem. Sajnos ez a könyv sem ért fel az elvárásokhoz.
Nagyon szeretem Fitzgerald stílusát, általa szerettem bele teljes mértékben a '20-as évek Amerikájába, viszont egyszerűen nem tudom elviselni azt a mennyiségű háttértörténetet, amit egy-egy könyvében le akar dugni az ember torkán. Ezt a könyvet is csak olvastam, olvastam, és úgy a 100-adik oldalig SEMMI nem történt benne, csak mindenkinek megismerhettük a családfáját. Nehéz így fenntartani az érdeklődést.
Aztán beindult a történet, és az a része már úgy, ahogy tetszett, viszont úgy érzem, a hősnői mind egyformák, egy kaptafára készülnek a tragikus hangulataikkal és végzetasszonya típusú habitusukkal. A férfi főszereplők is mind nagyon hasonlóak: elvarázsoltak, gazdagok és nagyon tudnak szeretni.
Sajnos nagyon nem tetszett, hiába az izgalmas hangulat, a festői képek, és a gyorsan égő, óriási szerelem. Egy ideig most jegelem a könyveit, mert nem akarok még távolabb sodródni tőle.
